A Workplace Full of Cute Girls——Is This a Yuri Delusion?

Anime and manga series that dive into the creation of anime and manga themselves are rare treats. It’s not often that a series gets this meta. Even rarer are those gems filled with cute girls doing cute things. Now, we have one such series—centered around an adorable mangaka who can’t help but harbor some rather… unusual thoughts about her older female editor. Interestingly, that very editor also finds herself feeling strangely self-conscious whenever she’s working with the mangaka. We’ll get to see just how well these two can collaborate when A Mangaka’s Weirdly Wonderful Workplace (titled Egao no Taenai Shokuba Desu in Japanese, also translated as The Workplace Where Smiles Never End) makes its anticipated premiere sometime in October 2025.

The original manga, A Mangaka’s Weirdly Wonderful Workplace, was first released by Kuzushiro on May 18, 2019. Kodansha has since published twelve volumes via Comic Days, steadily building a loyal and growing readership.
Meet the Cast of A Mangaka’s Weirdly Wonderful Workplace
Here are the three central characters—the imaginative and cute mangaka, her cool and beautiful editor, and her incredibly patient assistant—along with the talented voice cast bringing them to life:
• Nana Futami — Voiced by Yuko Natsuyoshi (known for Cheval Grand in Uma Musume: Pretty Derby).
A hardworking mangaka, Nana’s most distinctive trait is her tendency to weave all sorts of amusing—and slightly outrageous—delusions about her editor.

• Kaede Sato — Voiced by Sora Amamiya (famous for her role as Illustrious in Azur Lane).
A seriously dedicated editor, Kaede gives Nana just as much attention and care as she does to other more established and successful mangaka.

• Mizuki Hazama — Voiced by Miku Ito (who voiced Frenika in Sword Art Online: Alicization).
As Nana’s assistant, Mizuki is not only exceptionally talented but also incredibly patient, making her an indispensable support on Nana’s creative journey.

A Mangaka’s Weirdly Wonderful Workplace: Where Cute Girls Keep Smiling

At the heart of the story is Nana Futami, a rising rookie mangaka. Her shogi-themed manga has successfully captured the hearts of many readers, earning her a precious serialization opportunity. On her creative path, editor Kaede Sato and assistant Mizuki Hazama are always by her side, offering everything from creative guidance to daily assistance—forming the essential support system that helps her move forward smoothly.
That said, this gifted young artist isn’t without her flaws. Nana often falls into bouts of self-doubt, feels anxious in social situations, and—most peculiarly—tends to fantasize in strange ways about her editor, Kaede Sato. She jokingly calls this her “occupational hazard,” but it sometimes leads to some rather impolite thoughts about Kaede, adding many laugh-out-loud moments to their interactions.
Interestingly, the usually calm and mature Kaede Sato has her own little eccentricities. While she often appears cool and collected—even carrying a hint of unapproachable reserve—she unconsciously shows a soft spot and clear favoritism toward Nana. This charming contrast makes her character all the more compelling.

Assistant Mizuki Hazama’s storyline is equally engaging. She has always dreamed of becoming a full-fledged mangaka herself and possesses the skill to back it up—one of her one-panel comics once went viral on Twitter, and she even received a serialization offer, which she surprisingly turned down. On one hand, Mizuki still has reservations about her own storytelling ability and feels she needs more experience; on the other, working alongside Nana brings her a sense of joy and belonging she’s reluctant to leave behind.
As the story progresses, a new assistant will join Nana’s studio. This new member will not only make the daily atmosphere more lively but also bring fresh inspiration and challenges to Nana’s work, making her workplace adventures even more colorful. Despite being constantly bothered by her wild imagination, Nana’s passion and talent for creating manga never fade. With the steady support of Kaede, Mizuki, and new friends, she’ll overcome one challenge after another—tight deadlines, creative blocks, inner anxieties—and take step after step toward her dream of becoming a top mangaka, writing her own unique workplace growth story.
